Why do people use curtains over doors?
Those curtains are called portieres, a term derived from the French word la porte, meaning door. In the past, these double-sided curtains were used to give rooms privacy while also providing necessary insulation in the winter and air flow during the summer. Today, they can do anything from serve as a swanky partition in a small apartment or be used to carve out a "soft" bedroom in a larger, loft-like space.
