The Three Layers of Bedding

Have you ever seen a really rich luxuriously well puttogether bed? If so, you know that a lot of thought and investment goes into makinga bed “pop”. I could go on and on about bedding, fabrics, coordinating design, selection, pricing, sources, construction, quality, etc., however, let mesummarize this into the key elements of making a successful bed:

1.      Functionality

2.      Top of Bed

3.      Loft

Functionality

This pertains to the functional pieces that touch the body(i.e. sheeting and blanketing). You don’t want to skimp on sheeting andblanketing even if it is not viewable. Make sure your sheets are high quality Egyptiancotton, and do not get caught up on thread count. The quality of the sheetsdepends on the quality of the cotton, how it is milled and woven, and theproper thread count (600 is the ideal thread count because it feels luxuriousyet lets the body breath). Blanketing is accomplished with a coverlet, matelassé,or duvet filler. Whatever you use make sure it is easy to clean, keeps yourbody warm yet breathing, and doesn’t bother your allergies. Hint: Make sure you get fitted sheetsdeep enough for your mattress. Also, to extend the life of sheets do not drythem on high and take them out of the dryer slightly before they are dry.

Top of Bed

This is the part you see, or the “icing on the cake” if youwill. Think of it as the ball gown that covers your undergarments. The point Iam making here is “don’t sit on it or use it as a blanket, don’t let the petson it, and don’t wash it”. If you are worried about washable top of bedding, then you should not be worried about having a luxurious looking bed in thefirst place—bring it to the dry cleaners for goodness sakes. The sky is thelimit when it comes to top of bed. Use your imagination and creativity. It canbe as layered and pillowed as you want or as simple and streamlined as youdesire. Keep a scrap book or a Pinterest account with bedding inspiration ideas.Just remember, the more layers and pillows you do the more time you will spendevery day making it up. If you don’t have the time, limit the fabulous beds tothe guest rooms. Hint: Today’spillow top mattresses require super queen and super king duvets & coverletsto hang down far enough on the sides. These can only be purchased in a higherend retail bedding store or custom made.

Loft

This simply means how full and fluffy do you want thebedding to look. By the time you have your sheets, use duvet filler as ablanket, and stuff your duvet with proper filler your bed will look luxuriouslylofty and inviting. Pillow and Duvet fillers can be much more expensive thanyou anticipate, so make sure you invest in the fillers that give you the lookyou want, and also make you feel comfortable. If feather fill bothers you, dopoly fill or a combo poly/feather. “Do not skimp on this portion of thebedding, or your expensive top of bed will look cheap”. Hint: if you want your duvet to look very lofty and luxurious fillit with 2 or even 3 duvet fillers. Also, if you order a super queen or kingduvet make sure you get a super queen or king duvet filler.

As you can see, I have just begun to scratch the surface onbedding. If you make your decisions based on functionality, top of bed, andloft you will be well on your way to having the magazine quality style and lookyou have always wanted in a bed. Send us your bedding pics. We would love tosee them!
